The hinged clamp on the back opens up, the belt end slots in, and the toothed jaw grips it when you press the clamp shut. There's no stitching, riveting, or fold-over, so it suits a belt that needs trimming to length or a strap you want to swap between buckles. The clamp swivels, which lets a two-sided belt turn over. Also sold as a clip buckle.
